My Journey to Nurse Entrepreneurship: How it Started

I’ve spent the last few years dreaming about owning my own business. What it would look like and how I would manage it. I knew I wanted to start something low cost up-front, something I was passionate about, and something I would never get bored of.

I was scrolling social media one day and stumbled upon a nurse talking about how she was a freelance RN writer. I was immediately intrigued. I had no idea what a freelance RN writer was, but I love to write and I’m a nurse, so she had my immediate attention.

She spoke about how she made six figures writing about 15-20 hours a week and had great work-life balance.

Working for myself? Check.

Making extra money? Check.

Having more free time to spend with my family? Check.

It sounds like a dream.

I asked myself How do I make this happen?

Throughout my life I’ve had great examples of entrepreneurship. I’ve seen my parents start a few companies and endeavors. I’ve seen friends do it. So, I thought to myself, why not me?

Initially I thought about going back to school. I applied at an online university for an MBA in Health Administration. I got in. But the closer I got to starting school, the more I felt off about it. I knew I didn’t want to go into management. I knew I eventually wanted to work for myself.

I wanted to know if an MBA would help me reach my goal of becoming a nurse entrepreneur. So, I asked for advice. I went to every person whom I knew had an MBA/masters level degree and asked if they thought if their graduate degree made them more money or made them feel fulfilled.

I got a lot of great feedback.

I was speaking with one of my coworkers and it dawned on me.

(Que the lightbulb over my head).

I don’t need a business degree to start a business.

As a matter of fact, no one I knew that started their own business had an MBA.

They Just did it.

I immediately reached out to my school counselor and dropped my classes. I didn’t want to go back to school. I already have three degrees. Additionally, I didn’t want to go into debt for it.

I just wanted to start a business.

When I stumbled upon freelance health writing for nurses, I didn’t even know this was an option. I loved the idea of being able to write for a living. Especially if that means I can use my nursing degree and expertise to do it!

So, I got to work.

I am determined to start my nurse entrepreneur journey as a freelance nurse writer, and I want to share it with you.

Join me on this journey and let me know if you’re a nurse entrepreneur and what you do.
