I vividly remember one of my favorite interactions with a patient. I went to talk to this elderly patient, and they told me “I’ve lived an amazing life. I traveled the world with my spouse, met a lot of great people and I’ve just lived the best life. I did everything I wanted to do. I am ready to go.”
That one conversation changed my whole perspective on life. It made me realize that when I am elderly, I want to be able to say the same thing. That I lived a great life. That I met amazing people. That I traveled the world.
That conversation really kicked off the beginning of me wanting to be an entrepreneur. It made me realize that I want to spend more time at home with my family, not more time physically at work. I stopped chasing the career ladder and focused on what would make me happy in life. I started asking myself:
What would make me happy?
How do I want my life to look?
What kind of lifestyle do I want to live?
How can I achieve that?
That patient may never know how much that conversation affected me, but I think about it almost daily and they changed my perspective on life. It got me started on my entrepreneurial journey and I’m thankful for it.
Have you ever had a conversation with a patient like this? There is so much we can learn when we take the time to listen.
