So, you’ve landed an interview as a Nurse Case Manager? Congratulations! You’ve worked hard to get to this point, and you should be proud of yourself.
Of the four case management jobs I’ve interviewed for, I was offered all of them. After the interviews, I noticed that many of the questions that were asked were quite similar.
I want to dedicate a blog post to share my insight and help you ace your RN CM interview.
Interviews for nurse case managers typically involve two separate group interviews – first with management and then a peer interview.
Here are some questions that you will likely get asked.
- Why do you think you would make a great case manager?
- Why do you want to be a nurse case manager?
- Do you have experience in our software systems (for example Epic, Careport/Allscripts, InterQual).
- What experience do you have that would help you succeed in this role?
- Tell us a time where you had conflict with a coworker, how did you handle it?
- Give us an example of a time where you had to prioritize multiple tasks at work.
- Tell us a time where you had to handle a complex patient assignment and how you organized your workload.
- Describe a challenging patient case you’ve managed and what steps you took to resolve the issue.
- Tell us a time where you had a discharge barrier and how you resolved it.
- Describe a time where you had to advocate for a patient.
These are the top ten questions I’ve had during my interviews in case management. If you get especially nervous during job interviews, I highly suggest you practice how to answer them.
If you ever get stuck on a question during an interview or your mind goes blank-
TAKE A DEEP BREATH
SMILE
And say:
“Wow, that’s a great question, do you mind if I think about it and then we can come back to it?”
BAM. You just gave yourself some time to think about an answer and when the answer does come back to you, let them know. This strategy has always helped me when I felt stuck on a specific question. Don’t feel bad if you get stuck or your mind goes blank. It happens to most people during interviews. It’s okay to feel nervous. You’ve got this.
Now go forth and nail that interview. You’ll be an official RN Case Manager in no time.
Also, please reach out if you need help or have questions. I offer coaching sessions if you need extra support.
