- You want to. If you want to be a nurse, go for it.
2. You care about people and want to help people. Most nurses say they wanted to be a nurse because they care about people.
3. You’re good at taking care of people. Growing up I always thought of myself as the “mom” in my friend group because I was always looking out for other people and taking care of them. When my mom suggested I go to nursing school, she said I should consider it because I’m always taking care of others. And she was right.
4. Stability and job security. You will always have a job. I constantly have recruiters in my LinkedIn DMs. I usually get at least two messages with offers every week. I also have a travel agency that texts me about once a week with new jobs. I don’t plan on leaving my current position, but the opportunities are there.
5. Flexibility. You can work day shift, night shift, evening shift, 12-hour shifts, 8 hour shifts, 4 hour shifts. You can find jobs where you can create your schedule and choose the days you want to work. You can even schedule full weeks off between shifts. When I worked 12 hour shifts, I would frequently have 5 or 6 day stretches off, then work 3-5 shifts in a row.
6. Versatility and opportunities. There is so much you can do as a nurse. Here’s a small list of the different types of nursing jobs you can choose from:
Inpatient – in a hospital on a particular unit or floor. If you don’t like one floor, you can always apply for another one.
Outpatient- You can work in a private practice, specialty clinics, urgent care, dialysis centers, home care- there are many options outside of the hospital.
Remote- you can find plenty of remote positions such as a telephonic triage nurse, utilization review, care manager, prior authorization, and more.
Entrepreneurship- you can start a business as a nurse. See my free eBook for nurse entrepreneur ideas if you’re stuck. I will also be offering coaching sessions if you need help or have questions.
Travel nursing- you can choose to be a travel nurse and only work a few weeks out of the year.
It’s so easy to switch specialties, states, hospitals. The options can be endless. Find a specialty you’re interested in and start looking at the number of jobs that are available.
7. Good pay. The average pay for nurses in the United States is $86,070 according to The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics . That being said, this should not be the main reason why you want to be a nurse- the pay is stable, but you will work hard. Honestly, the pay may not match the amount and type of work you may need to do. Being a nurse can be grueling at times but if you’re in it for the right reasons then it will pay off.
If you think of other reasons why one should be a nurse, leave a comment and let us know. Also let me know why you choose to be a nurse. I love hearing peoples answer to this question.
